Putting Our Bulls to the Test... Literally!

Pennsylvania Performance Bull Test

Each year since 2010, we have selected our best herdsire prospects to compete against premier genetics from breeders throughout the Northeast US.  This opportunity has allowed us to compare not only how our progress stands up to our breed of choice but to other breeds as well.  The Pennsylvania Livestock Evaluation Center hosts an annual test consisting of approximately 175 bulls per year consisting of primarily Angus, Hereford, Simmental, Red Angus and Sim Angus.  Only the top 50 percent of the bulls are offered for sale each year.  We receive valuable performance information pertaining to growth, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics that allows us to evaluate our breeding program.  We are a strong supporter of this test and over 30 of our calves have completed the testing program.


In 2020, SHERMN Unrivaled E142 1905 (pictured) represented the Black Hereford breed as the only Black Hereford bull offered for sale as Lot 82 in the 84 bull offering.  He gained an impressive 4.47 lbs per day over the 112 day test.  His across breed performance was staggering.  He outgained 15/16 Herefords (tied the top Hereford at 4.47 lbs per day), 53/101 Angus, 5/6 Sim-Angus, 6/11 Red Angus,  1/1 Shorthorn, 1/1 Wagyu-Angus, and 16/18 Simmental... how about that for performance!  He was the second high selling bull in the offering at $5,700 (top seller $5,900) selling to a commercial Angus operation in Pennsylvania.  This unique Black Hereford certainly had everyone take notice on sale day!
